New Road Rule Concerning Emergency Vehicles
A new road rule now requires motorists to slow down to 40 km/hr when passing a stationary emergency vehicle displaying blue or red flashing lights and to not increase speed until a safe distance past the vehicle. The rule applies to vehicles travelling in both directions unless a median strip divides the road. Non-compliance with the rule will result in a $448.00 fine and 3 demerit points. The rule applies to emergency vehicles of the Police, Ambulance Service, Fire Department and the State Emergency Service. The new rule does not affect those motorists who wish to closely follow behind an ambulance in order to cut through heavy traffic!
